In
1978, after working with Jobs For Youth/New York and opening
Jobs For Youth/Boston, Frederick A. Jungmann sought opportunities
to replicate his youth employment organization in Chicago
(JFY). The aim: to address unemployment issues there and help
Chicago’s low-income youth become and remain contributing
members of their community.
By
1979, with support from what is now known as the Boys & Girls
Club of Chicago, initial funding from the Federal Department
of Labor and the efforts of G. Gale Roberson Sr., Jungmann
started Jobs For Youth/Chicago.
Since
then, JFY/Chicago remains the only agency of the three to
successfully pursue its original mission in serving at-risk
youth. In fact, more than two decades later, JFY has remained
Chicago’s largest non-profit organization devoted exclusively
to helping young people find employment and assisting companies
meet their hiring needs.
