about jobs for youth...

OUR CHALLENGE:

  • In 2002, more than 5 million youth nationwide, between the ages of 16 and 24 years old, were reportedly out-of-school and jobless. In Chicago, that number has soared to nearly 100,000.
  • More than 70% of the young people unemployed are either African-American or Hispanic.
  • Studies show that the majority of unemployed youth lack a high school diploma or GED and live in impoverished urban neighborhoods.

OUR MISSION:

Since 1979, Jobs For Youth Chicago has made it their mission to help young men and women from low-income families become a part of the economic mainstream and, in the process, provide the business community with motivated job-ready workers.

OUR VISION:

To become a nationally recognized leader in addressing youth employment through demonstrated best practices.

OUR WORK:

  • Jobs For Youth remains the city's largest non-profit organization devoted exclusively to helping young people find employment and to assisting companies meet hiring needs.
  • JFY offers work readiness/life skills training, GED classes, career counseling and job placement services to youth between the ages of 17 and 24.
  • Our programs and services are available free to both employers and youth.
  • In Fiscal Year '05, JFY made 1,065 placements working with more than 600 Chicago-area employers.
  • 50% of our youth have found employment within 59 days of completing our Workshop.
  • The average wage in FY '05 was $8.33 per hour.
