Schedule

As a Jobs For Youth volunteer, you are also a role model to those you are mentoring. Here's some advice for becoming an accomplished volunteer.

Guidelines for becoming a successful volunteer

Choose Your Own Schedule
The volunteer opportunity at Jobs For Youth is unique in that volunteers work during their lunch hour once a week by their own choosing. It is the responsibility of the Director of Volunteer Services to E-mail the monthly calendar to all volunteers as well as post it on-line via our website. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to contact the Director of Volunteer Services to schedule yourself for at least 2-3 classes. We have tried to arrange the most flexible and accommodating program for the volunteer, please work effectively with the Volunteer Office in scheduling yourself for classes.

Arrive On Time
Before accepting a volunteer position please consider whether your schedule will allow you to fulfill that position's time requirement. We rely on you being here and being on time. Whether in the Pre-Employment Workshop, GED classes, or fundraising activities. Tardiness or absences hold up the work for everyone. Someone else must fill in or tasks will go undone. If, from time to time, you are unable to keep your commitment, please call the Volunteer Services office as soon as possible and let us know. Volunteers who are late or absent on a regular basis may be asked to find a more suitable position for their schedule, or to take a leave from volunteer work until they are able to meet the time requirements.

Attire
Please Dress Appropriately Our dress code for volunteers is the same as that for staff: appropriate clothing for an office environment. Although shorts and jeans are acceptable in some offices on "casual days", JFY has a policy that prohibits shorts and tank tops. Remember that you are a role model for the young people you are helping. Please dress in a way that reflects that relationship.

Keep the Communication Lines Open
If at any time you feel you have made the wrong choice of jobs or you have new ideas for ways in which volunteers can work, please let someone in the Volunteer Office know. We value your input so don't hesitate to make suggestion and talk freely with staff members.
